Visiting always tempts human beings. To see the unknown and to know the unknown is the inborn quality of man. He can get innumerable benefits from visiting the places of historic interests. These types of places are full of significance and importance.
Travelling of historic places does much benefit to us. It helps us to be acquainted with historic events. If we can go back to our past ancestors or happenings, it will increase our knowledge, give practical sense of places, people and things. Travelling in historic places also impresses our mind with vastness, grandeur, wonder and majesty. It also unfolds the mysterious past. Last week, I got an opportunity to visit the historic Shat Gambuj Mosque at Bagerhat. I got much pleasure visiting the famous architectural designs of these places. The Shat Gombuj Mosque is a historic place situated in the suburbs of Bagerhat. It is a 15th century Islamic edifice situated on the edge of the Sunderbans. It is a world heritage site declared by UNESCO.
Last summer vacation, I went to visit the historic Shat Gambuj with my own eyes. We some friends and a teacher went there on a funny day. We started at 6 a.m. from Satkhira bus terminal and at about 2 p.m. we reached there safely.
The Mazar of Khan Jahan Ali is on a raised ground. It is made of cut-out stone. It is said that Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali brought these stones from Chattogram by floating on water. There are inscriptions in Arabic. I was thrilled observing the architectural technology of so many years ago. I observed a lot of people visiting this Mazar.
The Shat Gambuj Mosque is an enormous Mughal architectural site. It covers a large area. It has sixty pillars which support seventy-seven beautiful curved domes. These domes have been worn away with the passage of time. I went inside the mosque. We heard that Pir Khan Jahan Ali had used this as a mosque. Others say that it was used as a Darbar by the Mughal Governor of that place.
We also visited the dargah dighi. The water of this dighi is sweet. There are several crocodiles here. People believe if they can satisfy the hunger of these crocodiles with hens, cocks etc. their hope will be fulfilled. The names of the crocodiles are Kalapahar and Dhalapahar. We drank its water and some of my friends took bath here.
Another important place of Bagerhat is Ghoradighi. It is called Ghoradighi according to the name of a horse. It is said that before digging the dighi, a horse was made run and the distance of it was accepted as the length of the dighi. There are crocodiles in this dighi.
I felt very much pleasure visiting these places. I knew a lot about the activities of Pir Khan Jahan Ali. We took some photos. Our teacher explained everything in detail. I got opportunity to observe everything by my own eyes. In fact, it was a very educative visit. Visiting of historical places gives us enormous feelings. We should visit these places according to our capability. It helps to observe past glories and achievements.
